A mixed media sculpture of an abstract portrait of a man by American outsider artist Frank Kowing (1944-2016), created in 2007. The sculpture is comprised of a charcoal portrait of a man on paper placed within a plastic toilet seat that bears multiple inscriptions in red acrylic. Dated and stamped with the artist’s monogram to the lower right. There is a hanging wire affixed to the verso. Accompanied with a descriptive catalog on the artist’s painting series Journey of Healing.
Frank Kowing is an outsider artist based in Maryland with a larger than life reputation, the bulk of his focus being mixed media works, many grand in scale and with three dimensional quality. He has participated in a vast array of group shows and exhibits since his first shows in the 1970s in New York City. His education, after service in Vietnam with the US Army, was extensive and included the Gerrit Rietveld Academy, Amsterdam, Netherlands and several fine art institutions in Pennsylvania.

- minor wear, minor paint loss and dust residues throughout the sculpture; charcoal portrait on paper presents loose areas and would benefit from securing.
