Frank Kowing Mixed Media Sculpture "Dystopia"

Item Details

A mixed media sculpture titled Dystopia by Maryland-based artist Frank Kowing (American, 1944 – 2016), created in 2006. From the artist’s HMS Puppet Series, this work features an assemblage of painted branches, a small head sculptured with a loofah, and a face drawn on a piece of paper featuring agitated scribbles. A descriptive label providing the title, series, and date ‘9/06’ is attached. Additional captions on this label read ‘This piece consists of one part of a tableau celebrating the ongoing successful endeavor of humankind to destroy any possibility of quality of life anywhere; strip the need of this piece to be either a painting or a sculpture’. No signature was found on the composition. The work is accompanied with a descriptive catalog on the artist’s painting series Journey of Healing.

Frank Kowing is an outsider artist based in Maryland with a larger than life reputation, the bulk of his focus being mixed media works, many grand in scale and with three dimensional quality. He has participated in a vast array of group shows and exhibits since his first shows in the 1970s in New York City. His education, after service in Vietnam with the US Army, was extensive and included the Gerrit Rietveld Academy, Amsterdam, Netherlands and several fine art institutions in Pennsylvania.
