A mixed media sculpture of a mask by listed artist Frank Kowing (American, 1944 – 2016). Depicted is an African-style mask painted with acrylic paint and secured to a square base. Piece is unsigned by artist but comes from artist’s estate. Accompanied by a descriptive catalog on the artist’s painting series Journey of Healing.
Frank Kowing is an outsider artist based in Maryland with a larger than life reputation. He is known for his mixed media works, many grand in scale and with three dimensional quality. He has participated in a vast array of group shows and exhibits since his first shows in the 1970s in New York City. His education, after service in Vietnam with the US Army, was extensive and included the Gerrit Rietveld Academy, Amsterdam, Netherlands and several fine art institutions in Pennsylvania.
