Frank Kowing Mixed Media on Canvas "States"

A mixed media composition on canvas titled States by Maryland-based artist Frank Kowing (American, 1944-2016), created in 2009. Composed of mostly acrylic paint and duct tape, this work features a textural canvas filled with erratic drips and splatters in neon green and pink against a dark background. Curvalinear duct tape protrusions are arranged to resemble a tree shape with large eyes. The work is signed, titled, and specifically dated ‘4-09’ to the verso. The composition remains unframed. It is accompanied with a descriptive catalog on the artist’s painting series Journey of Healing.

Frank Kowing is an outsider artist based in Maryland with a larger than life reputation. He is known for his mixed media works, many grand in scale and with three dimensional quality. He has participated in a vast array of group shows and exhibits since his first shows in the 1970s in New York City. His education, after service in Vietnam with the US Army, was extensive and included the Gerrit Rietveld Academy, Amsterdam, Netherlands and several fine art institutions in Pennsylvania.
