David Davidovich Burliuk Oil Painting on Board "Two Keys"

Item Details

An oil painting on board titled To Get One Kiss Use Two Keys by well listed Russian artist David Davidovich Burliuk (American/Ukrainian, 1882-1967). The painting depicting a two faced gentleman in formal attire using keys to gain entrance to white doors on opposite sides of the composition. The title is printed in the lower margin and the artist’s signature is found in the lower right corner. The small painting is housed in a rather elaborate two tiered framed having a gold finish.
Interestingly, please note the painting offered in this sale by Clyde Singer (item #17DCC995-042) which makes reference to Burliuk in the title A Toast to Burliuk, Drink to the Painter of Painters . As both painters were in New York at the same time and Burliuk was known to paint scenes of everyday life favored by the Ashcan School painters, it is easy to imagine the two artist’s crossed paths at a favorite drinking establishment (possibly Mcsorelys).

David Davidovich Burliuk is renowned as the ‘father of Futurism,’ and a major contributor to Modern Art in the early part of the 20th century. Born in 1882 near the city of Kharkiv in eastern Ukraine, Burliuk studied in Odessa and Kazan, at the Munich Royal Academy of Arts, and the École des Beaux-Arts in Paris. His work is a mix of Fauvist, Cubist, and Futurist styles, which he combined with his interest in nature and a love of Ukrainian folklore.
