1968 John Nartker Art Pottery Vase

Item Details

A 1968 signed art pottery vase by artist John R. Nartker (American 1930-1998). An Ohio native, Nartker worked primarily in painting, printmaking, and ceramics. At the College of Mount St. Joseph, he served as the Department of Art Chair for eight years. The artist’s exploration in ceramics was deepened by study at the University of Ikebukuro in Japan, where he had been stationed while serving in the U.S. Air Force. A member of the Byatsubouka Kyokui Modern Art Group, he became fluent in Japanese. The influence of Japanese functional earthenware arts can be seen in this wheel-thrown and hand-altered vase. The gourd-like piece begins with a satin-glazed, narrow neck; below the rim, the sides of the vase feature rough vertical etch marks and flap-like protrusions, which have been heavily glazed in a light brown-celadon. The vase is signed and dated on the underside.
