19th Century Gothic Revival Arm Chair

Item Details

A mid-19th century Gothic Revival mahogany arm chair. The ornately carved and pierced back features elements reminiscent of Gothic architecture, such as pointed arches, quatrefoils, and a central rosette inspired by stained glass windows characteristic of Gothic cathedrals. The stiles on either side of the back are topped with pointed spires and connected to majestic ‘S’ shape scroll arms with upholstered rests. The chair rests on turned legs on arrow feet in front and splayed legs in the back. The spring seats are upholstered in a burnt orange velvet fabric. The arm chair is in the style of furniture makers J. and J. W. Meeks, active in New York from ca. 1836–59.
