An oil painting on canvas still life by Edgar Yaeger (American, 1904-1997), executed in 1982. Sitting upon a fiery table cloth of orange and pink tones is a candlestick, bushel of grapes and a wine bottle. Floral elements appear to the left with a background of varied grey-green tones. Signed and dated to the lower right in paint. Presented without glass and housed in a hand carved and painted gesso and wood frame by Yaeger himself. The frame is signed to the verso.
Known for his modern abstract style and his WPA murals of the Depression era, Yaeger was influenced by European modernists such as Paul Cézanne, Pablo Picasso and Giorgio de Chirico. Yaeger’s work has been exhibited at many institutions including the Museum of Modern Art, the Detroit Institute of Art, the Corcoran Gallery, the Art Institute of Chicago, and the Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Arts, among others.
