Attributed to Harold Von Schmidt Oil Painting on Canvas Double Portrait

Item Details

An oil painting on canvas portrait of two men attributed to Harold Von Schmidt (American, 1893-1982). Depicted in tremendous realism are two busts of men. The man, appearing to be a police officer, on the left gazes to his left with a suspicious eye and furrowed brow as he twirls his bushy mustache. To the right is a bushy haired man with a simple hat upon his head and a conniving look of suspect in his face. To the lower left is a small inscription, _ for Bill/ much Thanks/ ’Von_. The work remains unframed.

Harold Von Schmidt was born in Alameda, California on May 19, 1893. He studied at the College of Arts and Crafts in Oakland, California, and then spent three years at the San Francisco Art Institute. He moved to New York in the 1920s to study at the Grand Central Art School and found work as an illustrator for the Saturday Evening Post. In the 1930s he helped to found the Famous Artists School in Westport, Connecticut where he taught. Known primarily for his Western subjects, his works are shown at the West Point Naval Academy, as well as the Governor’s office in Sacramento, California, the Montana Historical Society, and the National Cowboy Hall of Fame.
