Early 20th Century Books, Portrait and Book Plate from William Kavanaugh Doty

A collection of early 20th century books, a cut silhouette portrait, book plate and letters from William Kavanaugh Doty. The group includes three small cloth bound books titled, The Confectionery of Monsieur Giron published in 1915 by The Michie Company. One of the books is inscribed in ink to Margaret Doty from her son, the writer, William. Also, two paperback copies of the 1911 and 1913 literary magazine from William and Mary, inside are poems and essays by William Kavanaugh Doty. Also included is a hardbound 1922 edition of Samuel Zenas Ammen and The Kappa Alpha Order published by Surber-Arundale Company; a hardcover 1924 copy of Between Dawn and Sunrise Verses of Illusion published by The Norman Company, Baltimore; a half leather bound 1923 edition of Blue Beads and Amber A Child’s Book of Verses by Mary Virginia Harris with an introduction by William Kavanaugh Doty, published by The Norman Remington Co.; a 1918 cloth bound play titled One Night In a Garden adapted from James Lane Allen’s book, The Mettle of the Pasture. Accompanying the play are letters from The MacMillian Company giving permission to publish the play. An oval wood framed cut silhouette portrait of William Kavanaugh Doty., other letters and book plates are part of the collection.

William Kavanaugh Doty was born near Richmond, Kentucky in 1886. He attended several colleges, Transylvania, University of Virginia and William and Mary where he received his bachelor’s degree in 1912. He returned to the University of Virginia to receive his LL.B and his M.A. in 1913 and 1917 respectively. He taught English and History at various schools and finally settled in 1919 in Annapolis as a faculty member within the English Department at The United States Naval Academy where he remained until his retirement in 1947. He was the winner of numerous college and university awards, and was the author and editors of several books.
Doty’s Aunt, Mary Kavanaugh Oldhan Eagle was the wife of Arkansas Governor James Philip Eagle, (1889-1893). As First Lady of Arkansas, her progressive attitude, active involvement in politics and women’s suffrage and international concerns provided a precedent for future Arkansas First Ladies. Doty’s Uncle, Kie Oldham was Arkansas State Senator from 1907-1909.
