Antique Hepplewhite Cherry Slant-Front Desk with Inlay, Circa Early 19th Century

An antique Hepplewhite cherry slant-front desk with inlay, circa early 19th century. The dovetailed case features a rectangular top above a hinged, slant front with lightwood string inlay and thumb-molded edges. The fitted interior contains six string-inlaid, dovetailed drawers and eight arched pigeonholes centered by a prospect door concealing two more drawers. The writing surface extends over four graduated, dovetailed drawers, the fronts of which are scratch-beaded and string-inlaid with grape-embossed, oval pulls. Flanking the drawers are chamfered, inlaid stiles continuing to flared, French feet centered by a scrolled skirt.

The desk is in the Central Kentucky regional style and is unmarked by the maker.

Condition

- some shrinkage cracks to top, slant front, and side panels; top with a few small, dark stains; desk interior with a couple of patches to rear work surface; slant front with replaced hinges and corresponding repairs at attachment points; long drawers with some lip repairs; some scuffs and chips to feet with a larger chip to rear, left foot; top long drawer missing interior locking mechanism; interior of case with some later reinforcement slats to side panels; one backboard adhered with a partial, paper shipping label.
