1873 "Ruskin's Modern Painters" in Five Volumes

An antique five volume hardcover complete set of the series Modern Painters, by notable Victorian English art critic John Ruskin. This is the ‘New Edition’, published 1873 by Glarke, Given & Hooper of New York; the first edition came out in installments from 1843 – 1860. The work is a defense of the emerging Romantic style of painting, and specifically of the work of J.M.W. Turner (1775 – 1851). They are bound in maroon cloth hardcovers with gilt lettering to the spine.
Condition
- light cover wear and normal paper yellowing; cracked/loose hinges to some volumes, but all covers are attached and bindings are solid.
