Hand-Knotted Persian Hamadan Area Rug
Item Details
A hand-knotted Persian Hamadan area rug. This wool rug from western Iran features a Sarouk-style floral design incorporating large-scale, stylized palmettes and sprays of flowers over an abrashed cherry-rose field. At one end. the rug shows possible signs of having been started by one weaver and then taken over by another, as the plotting and scale of the design abruptly shifts. The palette is cherry-rose, sapphire, cobalt, black, and ivory. Framing the field are two borders, including a highly stylized herati main border grounded in ivory and cream and featuring large-scale, rectilinear palmettes and vines. Selvedges are overcast, the rug finishing at each end with short cotton warp fringe. It is unlabeled.
