Item Details
An etching by E.T. Hurley (American, 1869-1950), with the subject a brooding view of Fountain Square during a storm, in a rich and atmospheric sepia tone. Rows of trees to both sides flank the iconic landmark. The work is pencil-signed and dated 1918 to the lower right corner and presented under wood bordered white mat and glass front wood frame with wire to the back for hanging. A Cincinnati painter whose landscapes and etchings reflected the area where he lived, Hurley was also a decorator for Rookwood Pottery from 1896 to 1948. Many of his paintings were with pastel, and some were on ceramic. A frequent subject was Mount Adams including its landmark, the Church of the Immaculate Conception.
