A watercolor painting on paper titled Tottenham High Cross, England attributed to well-listed British artist George Sidney Shepherd (1784-1862), created circa 1816. This watercolor illustrates in fine and exacting detail the Tottenham High Cross, located in the center of Tottenham Village, London. Unsigned by the artist. An informational gallery label and photocopy of handwritten inscribed to the verso including artist’s name and more are affixed to the verso. The painting it is presented behind glass, beneath an off-white mat, housed in a gilt and gesso wood frame.
George Sidney Shepherd is known for his topographical watercolor paintings of the English countryside. Shepherd received his early art education at the Dr. Cox Macro’s Sketching Academy and later was a founding member of the New Society of Painters in Watercolors which was initially formed due to the Royal Academies refusal to recognize watercolor as an important contribution to art.
