Signed Doña Rosa Handbuilt Black Clay Oaxaca Vase and Figurine

Item Details

A set of signed Oaxaca Mexican black pottery by world renowned potter Doña Rosa (Mexican, d. 1980) of San Bartolo Coyotepec, Oaxaca, Mexico. The group includes a handbuilt vase and a stylized frog figurine, both made of highly burnished black clay fired to having a metallic, silvery black finish. The vase has a wide mouth with a ruffled edge, and a somewhat square body, embellished with hand-applied flower designs around the shoulders. The figurine depicts a frog, with long legs and pierced holes through the back. Both are signed ‘Doña Rosa’ and ‘S.VC Oax. Mex’ or ‘SVco Coyotepec, Oaxaca, Mexico’.

Doña Rosa is known for her modern development of the use of black clay, “barro negro,” in Mexican pottery, and using a burnishing technique to compress the clay platelets so that the ware is exceptionally strong, glossy and has a rich, deep onyx black color. Her work is collected and prized among aficionados of the Mexican pottery tradition, and her family still operates her workshop in its original location. Please see the link below for a video of Doña Rosa making a vessel on her rudimentary potter’s “wheel.”
