African Wooden Mask

Item Details

A carved and painted African mask, possibly from the Bemba tribe in Northeast Congo. The long oval face is carved with concentric curves radiating from the eye and painted a matte reddish brown. The large circular eyes are painted red to the upper lid and white under the eye. A long fiber fringe encircles the mask. It is fitted with a cord to the underside for hanging.

Condition

- minor loss of paint to the area around the eyes; fiber fringe is worn and somewhat tangled.
