Lajos Kassák Abstract Gouache Painting on Paper

A gouache painting on paper constructivist composition by Lajos Kassák (Hungarian, 1887-1967). In the center of the composition is a vibrant yellow circle. Rectangular planes of red and maroon appear around the circe with a thin white plane to the top center. Signed to the lower right, ‘Kassák.’ Presented with a taupe colored mat, under glass, and housed in a black painted wood frame.

Lajos Kassak was born in Ersekujvar, Hungary on March 21, 1887. As a young man, he apprenticed as a blacksmith. He left for France in 1909 to discover a wealth of new culture influenced by Robert Delaunay (1885-1941) and Pablo Picasso (1881-1973). Upon his return to Hungary he found himself as a leader of the Hungarian cultural revolution inspired by the cubist movements in France and Italy. He is most known for his abstract compositions affiliated with constructivism, cubism and dadaism.
