An oil painting on canvas figural landscape scene by Robert Hopkin (Scottish/American, 1832-1909). Depicted is a dark landscape scene with several robed figures to the left side. They appear among a vast, grey landscape rendered in earthen tones. Signed to the lower right and inscribed to the verso, ‘R. Hopkin.’ Presented without glass and housed in a painted and gilt wood frame with deep cove moulding.
Robert Hopkin was born in Glasgow, Scotland in 1843. He immigrated to the U.S. in 1843 and his earliest recorded painting is 1845. An almost entirely self-taught painter, he became known for his marine and landscape paintings of the Detroit, Michigan and surrounding great lakes area. Hopkin also decorated the interior of buildings and ships, notably for his work on the New Orleans Cotton Exchange (1883) and the Detroit Opera House (1869).
