An antique Persian Afshar area rug. This wool rug is hand-knotted in a palette of sapphire, azure, faded peach, shades of tan, and cream. It begins with a hexagonal serrated lozenge featuring a lattice of mid-scale boteh and small boteh over a sapphire field. Spandrels are grounded in azure and populated with images of birds and other animals as well as small tree of life figures, vases, and split oak leaves. The field is framed by compound borders, including a geometric meandering boteh pattern over cream. Selvedges are overcast, the rug finishing at each end with unbound wool warp fringe. It is unlabeled.
