Pair of Léonard Tsuguharu Foujita Etchings with Aquatint on Paper

Item Details

In Plate

A pair of signed etchings with aquatint on paper by extremely well-listed French-Japanese artist Léonard Tsuguharu Foujita (1886-1968). This pair includes one print depicting two kittens embracing and is signed by hand in Japanese characters and the Latin alphabet and dated 1929. The second print depicts a single kitten sitting with its eyes gazing towards the viewer. This print is also signed by hand in Japanese characters and the Latin alphabet and dated 1929 to the lower left corner. Both prints are housed in simple black wooden frames with white matboard under glass.

Léonard Tsuguharu Foujita is perhaps best known for his depictions of women, cats, and genre scenes of French peasant children. Born in Japan, Foujita would eventually settle in Paris. A friend of Pablo Picasso and Henri Matisse, Foujita’s works blend Japanese ink and print techniques with Western influences to create a unique and distinctive style. His best-known work is a collection of 20 feline etchings, published in the Book of Cats (1930). His works are housed in the POLA Museum of Art, the Metropolitan Museum of Art, private collections, and more.
