Antique Hand-Knotted Persian Khamseh Area Rug
Item Details
An antique hand-knotted Persian tribal rug. Attributed to Khamseh Confederacy weavers from Fars province, this semi-freeform wool rug is filled with boteh and depictions of peacocks in a palette of rose, midnight blue, sapphire, pink, and cream. It begins with an off-center, irregularly shaped hexagonal medallion, which is grounded in sapphire, with four pendants. The medallion rests on a rose-colored, stepped lozenge, the lozenge, in turn, resting on a midnight-blue field edged in ram’s horn motifs. Framing the field are three borders, including a Khamseh main border featuring a complex geometric pattern over cream. Selvedges are overcast. Ends finish with short kilim skirts in blue and brown, with short warp fringe made of goat and camel hair. Unlabeled.
