19th Century Clews Staffordshire General Lafayette Platter

An antique Staffordshire historic platter. Circa 1824 – 25. This large oblong platter titled Landing of General Lafayette at Castle Garden New York, 16 August, 1824 was manufactured by James and Ralph Clews of Staffordshire, England, after source material drawn and engraved by American Samuel Maverick. It depicts the Manhattan arrival of Lafayette aboard the Chancellor Livingston. His ship was escorted by the Robert Fulton as six cannons are shown firing in salute. Measuring just under twenty inches, this platter is printed in blue transfer ware to white earthenware. The well features a dripping recess. The platter can be displayed by the attached hanging hardware. Please note the condition statement for this piece.
