Marjorie Strider Acrylic Painting on Canvas "Dreaming"

Item Details

An acrylic painting on canvas titled Dreaming by well-listed, American artist Marjorie Strider (1934-2014), created in 2011. Featured is a minimalist, Pop Art paintings of a pinup girl lying with her knees spread and back arched allowing her hair to cascade past the bottom edge of the canvas. Her thick eyelashes and slightly parted red lips add to the suggestive nature of this painting, which is rendered with saturated hues and bold outlines. It is signed to the verso with a gallery label. This painting remains unframed; fitted with hanging wire to the verso.

Marjorie Strider was born in Guthrie, Oklahoma, and received her art degree from the Kansas City Art Institute in Missouri. In 1957 she moved to New York City, and although Abstract Expressionism was the prevalent art movement at the time, Strider veered from the norm and became a part of the first surge of Pop artist, along with Andy Warhol and Roy Lichtenstein. She is well-known for her minimalist paintings and self-described ‘build-ups’ of pinup girls and vegetables, which are rendered with cardboard, wood, and foam to form 3-D areas of the composition. Strider has been quoted describing her pinups as a satirical rendition of gentlemen’s magazines; she used the outright objectification of women seen in magazines and other media and transformed it into poignant and humorous works of art.
