Hauber & Reuther Porcelain Beer Stein, "

Item Details

A porcelain lidded beer stein by Hauber & Reuther. It features a pewter metal thumb lift and lid, over a polychrome stein with gold and white accents. The central vignette depicts a rotund commander from the Napoleonic era, saber drawn and dog by his side, leading a drummer and some weary soldiers, with a scrollwork inscription in German to the bottom corner. It is impressed marked ‘HR’ and ‘457.’ The ‘HR’ mark was used at the Merkelbach & Wick between 1886 – 1897. The scene on the stein references a fictional militia in a fictional village, taken from a play written by August van Kotzebue (1761-1819) about the German Provinces.
