A signed abstract watercolor on paper by well-listed American Abstract Expressionist Paul Chidlaw (Cincinnati, 1900 – 1989). This painting depicts several loosely formed figures and foliage in purple and red against a background of loose transparent brushstrokes. It is signed by hand to the lower right. This piece is presented matted in black, behind glass, and in a gold-tone frame with cast embellishments. The verso of this piece is equipped to hang.
Chidlaw was born in Cleves, Ohio and studied at both the Cincinnati Art Academy and L’Ecole des Beaux Arts in Fontainebleau, France. He returned to Cincinnati where he then taught at the Art Academy mentoring many students. He was considered a pioneer of the Abstract movement, at the time, and he remains one of Cincinnati’s best-loved native artists. His artwork is displayed at the Cincinnati Art Museum and Xavier University.
