Mettlach "St. Florian" Ceramic Stein by Villeroy and Boch

Item Details

A tall ceramic one half liter Mettlach St. Florian stein by Villeroy and Boch, considered to be one of Villeroy’s finest steins. It depicts a painted relief scene of an oversized and armored Saint Florian with a banner in one hand and a bucket in the other, quenching a city fire (‘The Dousing’). The dragon scale pewter lid with a thumb lift is attached to a rooster head and large ceramic dragon body handle. The design is attributed to Otto Hupp, circa 1896, and is based on the legend of St. Florian, the patron saint of chimney sweeps and firemen for hundreds of years. It has the ‘1786’ mark with the Mettlach Abbey mark, and production marks. It is marked ‘½L’ near the rim on one side.
