A vintage hand-painted chinoiserie breakfront secretary bookcase by Union National. The upper cabinet features a split pediment with dentil and fluted detailing over glass doors opening to four levels of display. The center section is lighted. The base cabinet features four center drawers flanked by two small drawers over single doors opening to reveal two levels of storage. The top center drawer features a drop front that opens to a pull out writing surface, small cabinet, four open cubicles, and four drawers. This cabinet features a hand-painted finish rendered in muted hues to a black lacquer base. The upper cabinet interior and drop-front desk are painted a deep red. This piece features open ring, teardrop, and bail pull hardware. A maker’s plaque is attached to a drawer interior. It is signed to the lower right door by the artist, Genoa. This item is located on the main level of the home. Professional movers are suggested for this large piece.
The Union National Furniture Company of Jamestown, New York operated from 1939 to 1994. It is known for manufacturing high-end furniture made of quality hardwoods. The company employed skilled artists for their painted pieces, many of whom signed their work.
