Paul Chidlaw (1900 – 1989) was born in Cleves, Ohio. Chidlaw taught at both Our Lady of Cincinnati College (now part of Xavier University) and the Art Academy of Cincinnati from 1946 to 1963 where he was also a student from 1919 to 1923 before going on to study at L’Ecole des Beaux-Arts, Fountainbleu, France. Chidlaw’s art is highly revered and is displayed at the Cincinnati Art Museum and Xavier University as well as many private collections. The Chidlaw Gallery at the Art Academy of Cincinnati is also named in his honor as he is still revered for being one of the first Abstract Expressionists to work in Cincinnati. He remains one of Cincinnati’s best-loved, native artists. Chidlaw is often associated with, fellow Cincinnati painter and abstract expressionist, Jack Meanwell (1919 – 2005). Their works exhibited together in 2010 at the Mary Ran Gallery, in an exhibit called “Paul Chidlaw and Jack Meanwell – Battle of the Abstract Expressionists.”
