Reproduction Filipino Mununggul Jar

Item Details

A lidded earthenware vessel in the style of the Manunggul jar. The original jar was discovered in 1962 as part of a Neolithic burial site in the Palawan province of the Philippines. It was used as a secondary burial vessel, storing the bones of the deceased. This reproduction piece is finished in a terra-cotta glaze with a decorative band to the neck and lid. The molded figures represent the soul of the deceased on a journey to the afterlife. Hand-painted red scroll motifs mimic waves. This piece is marked with a label to the underside.
