Paul Chidlaw A Collection of WWII Era Early Studies on Paper

Item Details

Watercolor, Acrylic

A collection of thirty-nine early mixed media paintings on paper cards by well listed, Cincinnati artist Paul Chidlaw (1900 – 1989); created during the WWII Era. Most artworks are featured on ‘Notice of Tool Rejection’ paper cards; unsigned. The collections envelope has ‘Early Paintings 1945’ written in pencil on the outside. These pieces feature some typical elements in Chidlaw’s abstracted expressive works with a flowing variety of colors and textures, bold strokes, strong outlining, and prominent line work. The paintings are not framed or matted, awaiting your choice of presentation.

Paul Chidlaw (1900 – 1989) was born in Cleves, Ohio. Chidlaw taught at both Our Lady of Cincinnati College (now part of Xavier University) and the Art Academy of Cincinnati from 1946 to 1963 where he was also a student from 1919 to 1923 before going on to study at L’Ecole des Beaux-Arts, Fountainbleu, France. Chidlaw’s art is highly revered and is displayed at the Cincinnati Art Museum and Xavier University as well as many private collections. The Chidlaw Gallery at the Art Academy of Cincinnati is also named in his honor as he is still revered for being one of the first Abstract Expressionists to work in Cincinnati. He remains one of Cincinnati’s best-loved, native artists. Chidlaw is often associated with, fellow Cincinnati painter and abstract expressionist, Jack Meanwell (1919 – 2005). Their works exhibited together in 2010 at the Mary Ran Gallery, in an exhibit called “Paul Chidlaw and Jack Meanwell – Battle of the Abstract Expressionists.”
