A limited edition etching with aquatint on paper by listed South African artist Pieter Van Der Westhuizen (1931-2008). This intaglio print depicts a young woman’s head and shoulders. The woman is wearing a hat and ruffled collar and her eyes are cast downward. The work is signed in graphite and dated ’98 in the lower right margin, and hand numbered 6 in an edition of 30. It is presented under glass with layered off-white and tan mats in a gold tone metal frame. There is a hanging wire to the verso.

Born in Pretoria, South Africa in 1931, Pieter Van Der Westhuizen started painting at a young age of four. He studied Art at UNISA under Sakkie Eloff, Leo Theron and Robert Hodgins, as well as at Unisa under Zakkie Eloff, Leo Theron, Robert Hodgins and many others. In 1960 Van Der Westhuizen started his work under Alfred Krentz, and in 1971 under Erik Laubscher. During 1979-80 he attended the Nationale Hoger Institute voor Schone Kunst at the Royal Academy for Fine Arts in Belgium, and in 1982 and 1985 he continued his studies at the Stedelijke Akademie in Ghent and the Ryks Centrum voor Grafiek in Kasterlee, Belgium. In 1983 and 1985 he also studied wood-block printing in Japan.
Van Der Westhuizen enjoyed capturing the art of the everyday objects, people, and landscapes that surrounded him. His vibrant and expressive work is comprised mainly of landscapes, portraits, figures, still lifes, and abstract compositions. in 1988 and 1989 exhibited with Marc Chagall, Yaacov Agam and Ben Avram, inter alia, in Madrid, Spain, and his biggest and most successful exhibition ever held in his home country of South Africa was in honor of his 65th birthday celebrations. His works can be found in public and private collections in South Africa and all over the world. Pieter van der Westhuizen is widely regarded as one of the most popular artists in South Africa today.
