19th Century Gothic Revival Armchair with Upholstered Seat

Item Details

A mid-19th century Gothic Revival mahogany arm chair. The ornately carved and pierced back features elements reminiscent of Gothic architecture, such as pointed arches, trefoils, and a central rosette inspired by stained glass windows characteristic of Gothic cathedrals. Turned finials flank the back and connect to turned arms that terminate in balls. The chair rises on turned legs in front and splayed legs in back, all on porcelain casters. The spring seats are upholstered in a burnt orange velvet fabric with double welting. The arm chair is in the style of furniture makers J. and J. W. Meeks, active in New York from ca. 1836–59.

Condition

- part of crest has been broken off and reglued, one caster missing at back right leg, wear to finish at top of crest, upholstery is faded and dusty, various scrapes and scuffs to legs.
