Jack Meanwell Oil Painting on Canvas Board Woman in Repose

Item Details

An original oil painting on canvas board by well-listed Abstract Expressionist artist Jack Meanwell (1919 – 2005). This painting depicts a female nude figure in repose on a studio couch in front of a mirror, and features some of the typical elements in Meanwell’s work, bold colors and thick strokes of paint. This piece has been signed, in-wet-paint, to the lower right corner in black. The canvas is presented in a wide gold tone wooden and gesso frame with decorative scrollwork pattern, and a deep burled wood to the interior edge. A hanging wire is attached to the verso.

Jack Meanwell (1919 – 2005) is a renowned Cincinnati artist who painted in a wide spectrum from realism to abstract expressionist art. He was well-known for his dramatic, abstract landscapes painted in bright colors and bold strokes, and his dynamic gestural figure drawings. Meanwell was born in Windsor, Canada, and taught at the Cincinnati Art Academy for over twenty five years. He holds a special place among collected Cincinnati painters. Meanwell is often associated and comparable to fellow Cincinnati painter and abstract expressionist, Paul Chidlaw (1900 – 1989). Their works exhibited together in 2010 at the Mary Ran Gallery, in an exhibit called “Paul Chidlaw and Jack Meanwell – Battle of the Abstract Expressionists.”
