An original signed limited edition chiné-colle etching on paper by extremely well-listed French artist Henri Matisse (1869 – 1954), titled Mlle. M. M.. This print was created in 1920 by the artist for publication in his self-edited and self-printed book Cinquante dessins. The first edition of the book was published in an unnumbered limited edition of 1000 copies that each included 50 photo-lithographic reproductions of works by Matisse, as well as this hand-signed etching printed by the artist. The book was created to accompany the artist’s 1920 exhibition at Paris’s famed Galerie Bernheim Jeune. The etching depicts a loosely-illustrated portrait of the bust of Matisse’s daughter, Marguerite Matisse, printed in monochromatic white ink. It is hand-signed by the artist to the lower right. The print is matted in white and presented behind glass in a wooden frame with brushed gold tone finish and a hanging wire attached to the verso.
Condition
- significant foxing across surface of print, particularly to margins. Print is dry-mounted within matting. Light scratching to frame.
Dimensions
- measures frame. Plate mark measures 3.75" W x 5.5" H. Sheet size is not measurable due to dry-mounting in matting.
