Early Northern European Oil on Canvas Genre Scene

Item Details

Early 18th or late 17th century, likely Dutch or Northern European. An oil on canvas depiction of three figures, seemingly traders or merchants, in negotiation with one another. The figure in the background is well appointed in garb common to the Dutch during this period. The subject offered here, given the 20th century frame and evidence of the trimmed canvas, was likely to have been a larger subject at one time.

The canvas is a hand woven linen support typical of early 18th century works.

Condition

Relined previously, considerable inpainting (see images under UV light). Professionally restored in in a fine state of preservation, considering age.
