Castilian School Oil on Panel Depiction of Saint Barbara
Item Details
A 17th century oil on heavy panel, depicting an imprisoned Saint Barbara. The work is most emblematic of the Castilian School of 16th century painting, though likely dates to a later period. A figure meets with an imprisoned woman and a letter is exchanged. The work is unsigned. Unbalanced diminishing perspective and a naive rendering attribute the work to an untrained hand and possibly a student of the period.
The work is housed in a thick panel, eaten away by wormholes, and cradled to avoid warping. The frame is a fine Spanish example with stenciled lining and an iron bangle, also typical of the 17th century.
Condition
Considerable inpainting. One partial label dating to the early 20th century.
Dimensions
- measures the frame; visible image 18" W x 24" H.
