Alberto Prosdocimi Watercolor Painting on Paper Canal Landscape Scene

Item Details

A watercolor painting on paper depicting a canal landscape by Alberto Prosdocimi (Italian, 1852-1925). In the foreground, a tranquil canal reflects the warm glow of the setting sun while a small sail boat to the right disperses light ripples in the water. To the left is a figure standing along the edge of the canal with a small home behind them and a bridge down the way. Soft clouds float in the colorful sky above. Signed to the lower left, ‘A. Prosdocimi. F’. Presented under glass in an antique gesso and gilt wood frame with minute beading around the sight.

Alberto Prosdocimi was born in Italy in 1852. He studied at the Accademia di belle arti di Venezia (Academy of Fine Arts in Venice) but also learned a great deal from training in his father’s studio who taught him watercolor painting and manuscript illumination. Alberto received many commissions throughout his career for both watercolors and manuscripts. He is often noted for his drawings of the Basilica which were featured as chromolithographs in La Basilica di San Marco in Venezia illustrata nella storia e nell’arte da scrittori veneziani (1878-1893) published by Ferdinando Ongania (Italian, 1842-1911).
