A fine mid 19th century Folk Art oil on canvas portrait of a gentleman, likely painted by an itinerant portraitist. The well-executed painting depicts a handsome young man dressed in mid 19th century fashion in a black coat with high necked collar and white shirt front against a dark brown background. It is unsigned and mounted in a dark gilt finished wood frame that is wired for hanging.
Condition
- slight craquelure present throughout; three large punctures were repaired;
inpainting present; evidence of restoration under UV light; painting was relined; minor scratches and chips to the frame.
