19th-Century Russian Enameled Silver Icon of St. Nicholas of Myra
Item Details
A late 19th-century Russian icon oil painting on panel with an .875 silver riza. The painting depicts St. Nicholas of Myra with saints to the left or right. The silver riza has embossed and etched motifs with elaborate enamel decoration to the corners, name plaque, and crown. The assyer troinik is engraved unto a single die and indicates, ‘ЛО (Лев Фридрихович Олекс; Lev Fridrikovich Oleks)/ 1893/ 84 zolotniki (84/96 or .875 silver)/ Moscow.’ To the left of the troinik is a faint mark from the maker. The somewhat illegible maker’s mark is likely (ДГ) Dmitriy Andreevitch Gorbunov (working 1883-1908). The backing of the panel is wrapped in felt.
