Edward Gay Watercolor Painting on Paper River Landscape

Item Details

A watercolor painting on paper landscape scene with men fishing by Edward Gay (American, 1837-1928), executed in 1877. Along the banks of a shallow river stands a father and presumably his son with fishing rods in hand. On the far side of the water cows wade into the shallow to grab a drink. Verdant foliage and billowing clouds provide the back drop for the quaint scene. Signed and dated to the lower left. Presented with an off-white and green matting, under glass, and housed in an antique carved wood frame with trefoil designs to the corners.

Edward Gay was born in Dublin, Ireland in 1837. He immigrated to the United States with his family in 1848. Shortly after settling, he started his studies with Hudson River School painter James Hart (Scottish/American, 1828-1902). Gays was exhibiting at the National Academy of Design in New York by the time we was twenty-one. In 1858, he moved to Mt. Vernon where he would spend most of the rest of his life painting predoninantly southern Westchester County. Today, his work can be found at the Metropolitan Museum of Art, NY; the New-York Historical Society, NY; Westchester Woman’s Club, Mt. Vernon, NY; the Union League Club, New York, NY and more.
