An etching on paper Orientalism scene by Jean Leon Gerome Ferris (American, 1863-1930), executed in 1893. Depicted is a ‘Guard of the Harem’ showing a Kabyle guard at the threshold of a seraglio with his leopard at his feet. He is shirtless with a white robe around his waist and two swords tucked neatly. Oriental architectural elements and hanging drapery falls behind the man. Signed and dated in plate to the lower left, ‘Gerome Ferris 83.’ Presented with an off white mat, under glass, and housed in a black painted wood frame.

Jean Leon Gerome Ferris was born in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania in 1863. He studied with his father Stephen James Ferris (American, 1835-1915) who was a portrait painter and inspired by his uncle, Thomas Moran (American, 1837-1926). He spent time studying in Spain and in 1884 went to the Julian Academy in Paris under William Adolphe Bouguereau (French, 1825-1905). Until 1900, he traveled around England, France, Spain, Morocco and Belgium making sketches of the people and architecture. He was a devote follower of the great Orientalism painter Jean-Léon Gérôme (French, 1824-1904,) from whom Ferris took much of his inspiration.
