After George Henry Boughton Engraving on Paper "Hester Prynne"

An engraving on paper titled Hester Prynne after an original painting by George Henry Broughton (English/American, 1833-1905) engraved by Charles Philip Slocombe (English, 1832-1895) under the supervision of Boughton in 1881. The original illustration was done for Nathaniel Hawthorne’s novel The Scarlett Letter. Depicted is the stories protagonist, Hester Prynne, with her ‘scarlett letter’ around her bosom. Signed to the lower right in plate, ‘G.H. Boughton,’ and to the left, ‘CP Slocome Aq. Ft.’ Inscribed to the top margin, ‘Published by M. Knoedler & Company, 170 Fifth Avenue, New York. Goupil & Co., London & Paris,’ and to the lower margin, ‘Entered according to Act of Congress in the Year 1881 by M. Knoedler & Company in the Office of The Librarian of Congress at Washington.’ Signed by hand, in graphite, to the lower left, ‘G.H. Boughton.’ Presented with a black under mat and dark green top mat with gilt sight, under glass, and housed in a gilt and gesso wood frame.
