A late 19th-century etching on vellum titled The Gambler’s Wife by Charles A. Waltner (French, 1846-1925) after an original painting by Sir John Everett Millais RA (British, 1829-1896). Depicted is worrisome wife awaiting the return of her husband, the gambler. She gazes downward to the right, passing the time by flinging playing cards around. Inscriptions in plate to the lower left and right in plate for Waltner and Millias. Signed in graphite to the lower right by Waltner with inscriptions below the lower margin indicating that this piece is a ‘unique proof on vellum.’ To the verso are several paper notes from over the years indicating some of the history behind the piece. Presented with an off white mat, under glass, and housed in a gilt and gesso wood frame with cockbeading around the beveled sight and stylized moulding to the exterior edge.
Condition
- discoloration to the matting and lightly around the print; some areas of gesso loss to the frame; scratches and marks present throughout the frame.
