Item Details

untitled, 1980
charcoal on paper

24′ × 26′

Provenance
The Lucy Baker and Kenworth Moffett Collection of New New Group Painters

A charcoal drawing on paper by Michael Steiner, executed in 1980. The stark white background appears with carefully juxtaposed charcoal lines and planes in a carefully balanced composition. The skeletal structure is reminiscent of his steel sculptures that present challenging notions of stillness and kinetic, and wholeness and fragmentary. The work is mounted to cardboard, and wrapped in an acetate protective sleeve.

Steiner was a leading member of the Bennington School, which included a group of artists around Bennington College. His abstract sculptures and paintings are defined by geometric patterns.
