A hand-knotted Persian tribal area rug. This expressive, rectilinear wool rug, attributed to Qashqai weavers, is rendered in a palette of rose, sapphire, crimson, and pink. It begins with a multicolored serrated medallion with kochak pendants over a rose-colored, stepped lozenge. Filling the lozenge are colorful boteh and oak leaves. The lozenge rests on a sapphire field, the corners of which feature phaesants, oak leaves, stars, arrowheads, and other symbolic motifs. Compound borders frame the field; they include a primary bird’s head Luri border over sapphire. Selvedges are overcast, the rug finishing at each end with short cotton warp fringe. Unlabeled.
