Hugo Zacchini Oil Painting of a Clown

A signed oil painting on board of a clown by American artist and circus performer Hugo Zacchini (1898-1975). This painting depicts a figure costumed in clown makeup and a small cap with a flower in the brim. This portrait is expressively colored and against a black background which lends a festive air to the piece. It is signed to the lower left. This painting is presented in a white mat, behind glass, and in a painted wood frame with brass details on the corners. The verso of this piece is equipped to hang and contains some biographical information on the artist.

Hugo Zacchini (1898-1975), although best known for being the first human cannonball, was also an accomplished artist. Zacchini held two engineering degrees from the University of Florida in addition to a Master’s Degree in Art from the Jamestown Academy, NY. While living in Paris, he was friendly with Picasso, Dali, and Monet. After retiring from Ringling Brothers Barnum and Bailey Circus Zacchini taught art at Chaffey College in California. The artist is well known for his circus related paintings.
