Japanese Satsuma Style Biscuit Jar and Basket
Item Details
A Japanese satsuma style ceramic biscuit jar and basket. Each piece features wrapped wicker handles with elaborate moriage and gilt accents throughout.
The basket is hand painted with a peacock to the well and floral motifs throughout on a burgundy ground. It is numbered and marked to the underside by Hotta Yu Shoten & Co., indicating production between 1920 – 1947. It is accompanied by a hand-painted biscuit jar. It depicts four immortals, each with gilt halo, surrounded by detailed geometric patterns. This piece dates to the 1920s-1940s and is marked to the underside: ‘Made in Japan.’
Condition
- minor white marks to finish throughout; some wear to painted and gilt surfaces.
