Clintel Steed Oil Painting on Canvas "Figure Study"

Item Details

An oil painting on canvas titled Figure Study by listed contemporary artist Clintel Steed (New York, b. 1977), created in 1998. Portrayed with vibrant colors, textural impasto, and large expressionistic brushstrokes, this work features a seated nude figure next to a clothed figure. The initials ‘G.P.H.M.T.Y.G.’ are painted to the upper right, which stands for ‘God Please Help Me Thank You God’. The work is signed, dated, and titled to the verso. The composition remains unframed.

Clintel Steed grew up in a predominantly African American and Pentecostal community, this is an evident influence to his paintings. His work is a personal dialogue with African American culture, contemporary politics, and the Biblical struggle between good and evil. Much of his work is rendered in a thick impasto technique featuring expressionistic brushstrokes loosely applied throughout his compositions. He acquired his formal artistic training at the Art Institute of Chicago receiving a BFA in 1999 and his MFA from Indiana University in 2001. During his artistic career, he presented his work in multiple locations including the Indiana University Art Museum, New York Studio School and the National Academy of Design, among others.
