An mid-19th-century oil portrait on canvas of Joseph Shepperson, by listed portraitist William Poole Sheffield (United Kingdom; active 1804-1839). This attentively rendered painting depicts the blue-eyed figure wearing a black coat and cravat, his hair carefully groomed. The portrait has a detailed notation in paint to its verso, reading, ‘Joseph Shepperson, aged 51. Painted by Wm. Poole Sheffield. (Last sitting December 12th, 1839 being the birthday of Joseph Shepperson.)’ The painting is mounted in a black and gold tone frame with a wire for hanging.
Condition
- severe crazing across entire piece; paint loss toward edges; signs of inpainting, particularly in the colors surrounding the sitter’s face; slight wear frame, particularly corners; moderate dents and stretcher marks to bottom of piece.
